Who is ASU Professor David Zhu? Arizona Man Accused of Killing Wife

An Arizona State University professor was arrested on a murder charge after he allegedly fatally shot his wife on Saturday.
Police officers responded to reports of a shooting near 9300 N. 128th Way at around 6:30 p.m., the Scottsdale Police Department told Newsweek.
Law enforcement officials found a woman with a gunshot wound at the home. She was treated at the scene, then transported to a hospital where she died from her injuries.
An adult man, another adult woman and a male child were inside the residence when the shooting happened. The adult man, later identified as David Zhu, was taken into custody.
Zhu was booked into the Maricopa County Jail on Sunday on one count of first-degree murder. He is being held on $1 million bond.
No other injuries were reported in the shooting. Police said it was an “isolated incident” and there is no threat to the surrounding community.
The name of the wife has not been released yet.
“We don’t have any additional information to provide on this tragedy right now,” the Scottsdale Police Department said.
The couple’s 19-year-old daughter and 14-year-old son were inside the home at the time of the shooting, according to court documents obtained by FOX 10 Phoenix. They reportedly told officers that their parents fought “frequently” and were engaging in a “screaming fight” when the shooting occurred.
“Neither child expressed any surprise that David had shot and killed their mother,” court documents read.
Zhu allegedly told officers he was “trying to shoot the wall” behind his wife, according to the documents.
A shotgun and shotgun shells were found inside the residence.
Zhu is listed as a professor and dean’s council distinguished scholar in the Department of Management and Entrepreneurship on Arizona State University’s website. The university told Newsweek that he has been placed on administrative leave and he has been banned from campus and all university activities.
“Our condolences go out to all those affected by this tragedy,” an Arizona State University spokesperson said.
Zhu has worked at the university since 2009.
He has been published in several scholarly journals and international awards, according to the website. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan and attended undergraduate and graduate school at Nankai University in China.
He was scheduled to teach nine courses during the school’s fall semester, which starts on Thursday.
Arizona State University is a public research university with four main campuses. Zhu teaches at the Tempe campus, which is the largest with an enrollment of over 57,000 students.
