From an Estate Sale of 1880's - 1910's  CRYSTAL & CHINA, we offer from the LAZARUS STRAUS & SONS  CRYSTAL CUTTING SHOP in New York, NY, a STUNNING MOUTH BLOWN 9" diameter by 3 3/4" high SAWTOOTH EDGE BOWL from the AMERICAN BRILLIANT PERIOD, in the HEAVILY CUT PATTERN of THREE CROSSED "DOUBLE X" VESICAS with additional MAJOR MOTIFS of "STRAWBERRY DIAMOND KITES" and HOBSTARS. Also, MINOR MOTIFS OF STARS & FANS. LARGE 16 POINT HOBSTAR in center of bowl where Vesicas intersect and CHAIN OF HOBSTARS WITH FANS IN BETWEEN GOING AROUND SIDES. HIGH QUALITY HEAVY(4 LBS.) LEAD CRYSTAL THAT RINGS LIKE A BELL.
CONDITION: for  its age, this bowl is in superb condition without any cracks, gouges, utensil mark stains or noticeable losses. Appears to have been rarely ever used. HOWEVER, AFTER TRIPLE CHECKING, WE DID FIND THREE TEENY/MINISCULE LOSSES TO THE INNER EDGE OF THREE TEETH(SEE LAST 2 PHOTOS - LOOK FOR THE TEENY SPOT ON THE INNER PART OF THE LEFTMOST TOOTH OF THE TWO SHORT POINTY TEETH TO THE RIGHT OF CENTER; THEN, THERE IS A SINGLE MINISCULE SPOT ON THE INNER EDGE OF THE  THIRD & FOURTH TALLER FLAT TOP TEETH, TO THE LEFT OF THE POINTY TOOTH MENTIONED IN THE PRECEDING. THESE WERE SO HARD TO FIND THAT THEY WERE ONLY NOTICED WHEN I ASKED MY WIFE TO DO A 3RD CHECK ON THIS BOWL.
ATTRIBUTION/PROVENANCE: couldn't find this exact cut pattern bowl in any of our reference books or the Internet, however, we did find that Libbey, Eggington, Hoare & Straus all cut patterns with crossing double x vesicas and motifs of strawberry diamond kites, center hobstar & chain of hobstars. We boiled down our candidates to STRAUS'S "OCTAVUS" and EGGINTON'S "CRESWICK", however, we eliminated both because the vesicas and/or. minor motifs were not exactly the same as the pattern on our bowl.
Hitting a dead end with our research, we asked a friend who is an expert on the rich cut glasss of the ABP to take a look at the photos of this bowl. He came back with an attribution that the bowl was cut by LAZARUS STRAUS & SONS in a pattern that has not of yet been documented. This attribution is due to the fact that Straus cut often cut a radial star as the center of his hobstars. This attribution is attested to be the many radial star centers on the hobstars shown in the Straus catalog reprints referenced below. Although we strongly believe that this bowl is a Straus product, without supporting documentation, we cannot guarantee this attribution. However, we can guarantee it to be rich cut glass from the ABP.
PRICING GUIDELINES: this STRAUS BOWL APPEARS TO BE QUITE SCARCE, IN THAT THE ONLY ONE SOLD IN THE LAST 15 YEARS WAS MISIDENTIFIED AS AN EGGINTON PRODUCT.
In searching Ebay's 3 month and Worthpoint's 15 year histories for this ABP cut crystal bowl, we found one sale of the exact same bowl in 2/2019 for 0 and which was stated to be Egginton's Marquis pattern(this attribution is incorrect since the Marquis pattern shown in the Egginton catalog referenced below is not the same as our bowl or the pattern on the bowl sold as Marquis). See more detail on this under "Attribution/Provenance above). Please check out these websites.
