    Description

*1916 dated British Ordinance Map of the France Ypres area gridded for British artillery firing coordinates*
This map is in very good condition and was used by the British against the Germans to mark objective points and  guide artillery firing positions. The square grids on the map mark as a value of 1,000 yards with sub squares measuring at 500 yards in an A,B,C,D clockwise order. These squares with coordinate directions are explained in the bottom left of the map and would have been used extensively to fire on enemy positions.
These maps are printed on cloth and many did not survive the length of the war due to the wet and muddy conditions of the trenches. This map is in very good condition with common signs of use and wear.

    First World War
    , fought on the
    Western Front
    around
    Ypres
    , in
    West Flanders
, Belgium. The battle was part of the First Battle of Flanders, in which

    Belgian
    armies and the
    British Expeditionary Force
    (BEF) fought from
    Arras
    in France to
    Nieuport
on the Belgian coast, from 10 October to mid-November. The battles at Ypres began at the end of the
    Race to the Sea
, reciprocal attempts by the German and Franco-British armies to advance past the northern flank of their opponents. North of Ypres, the fighting continued in the
    Battle of the Yser
    (16–31 October), between the German
    4th Army
, the Belgian army and French marines.
