Description
☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆In 1893, Appleton Companies published a thirty part series titled “The Art of the World”. This was done for distribution at the 1893 Columbian Expo in Chicago. The intent was to expose the general public to the old masters, as well as the contempory artists of the time.
Each part contained two typogravures in color and two photogravures. There were also descriptions of the art, and a brief biography of the artist. This part has pages numbered 73 to 80, and is complete. The pages have come loose from the binding, which was by design, so all parts could be later bound together in two main volumes.
Each of the prints overall, measures about 12 ½” x 17” in size, and are perfectly suited for framing. See the example of a framed piece that we did. The cover is tattered and dog-eared, however the prints are clean and free of stains or foxing. The colored prints have a heavy paper matt, held in place by a dab of paste in the four corners. These are the original printings from 1893, and not contempory copies.
