Description
A very large, drop dead gorgeous example of Egginton’s classyROMAN
pattern on a 10” x 2 1/2” bowl, shown
EXACT
in catalog. The shallow shape of the blown blank shows off the design like a tray. Excellent condition with a few pinprick fleas on the teeth.
Egginton quality and design is second to none from the Brilliant Period, and always on fine blanks. Here is a particularly fine example of the seldom seen
ROMAN
pattern.
The design unfolds from the center bottom out, all eight sections emanating from the stylized Iron Cross with double miter cane infill. Those cane triangles are also the bottom points of the major motif: a huge, six-point hobstar whose side points are radiant stars, with the cane filled top point countering the bottom one. Note the oversized, deeply cut hob with its super fine cutting and huge, projecting stud.
The kite-shaped sections between the arms of the Iron Cross mark the secondary motif: elongated vesicas filled with a four part ‘butterfly-like’ design of both curved and straight miters, flanked at the top and bottom by glistening silver diamond. Egginton's signature U-cuts fill the valleys on the rim.
The fine blank, precision cutting, and first rate design attest to Egginton's high standing with collectors.
