    Description

    EARLY 17th-18th century NATIVE AMERICAN PIPESTONE ELBOW PIPE.
    The surface of this pipe, under high magnification,  evidences very early techniques of shaping, carving, and polishing
    used from Archaic  time through the end of the Mississippian period. I have dated it to the early 17th century (1600's) with genuine
    confidence that is its date of origin. It has clear
    indications of grinding/polishing and pecking,
    for those who are familiar with these technical characteristics.
    The carbonized areas from frequent smoking only add to the character of this fine relic.
    Please see the photos for the artisan's design elements and note that there are a couple of
    very tiny edge abrasions on the edge of the bowl one ancient flea-bite off the corner of the stem opening.
    Provenance: Thought to have been found in Missouri
    Size: Top off bowl to base 2 1/2 inches. Stem opening to base 3 1/2 inches.
    My Guarantee: This will paper with any agreed expert as authentic and at least 1800's. But, typically many are
    hesitant with pipes made of pipestone to guarantee any are 1600's. This one is.
