Description
1915 Panama Pacific Exposition Medal of Award. Struck by The United States Mint in Philadelphia in 1915 for the San Francisco Pan Pacific Exposition. The event was held to show-off the reconstruction of the city following the 1906 earthquake. There were three different award categories at the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco, gold, silver and bronze. The medals, struck by the US mint and designed by John Flanagan only were made in bronze. If you won silver or gold, you had the option of plating the medal at your own expense. As a result of the charge, many silver and gold medalists didn't bother, making the plated medals much scarcer than bronze. At 2.7 inches (70mm) in diameter, 4.8 ounces (134 grams) and struck in gold-plated bronze, this is a large and substantial medal. Designed by sculptor John Flanagan, it s considered one of the most beautiful American medals on a par with those designed by Augustus St. Gaudens. Flanagan also designed the Washington quarter.
